Any Sao Paulo vs Boca Juniors prediction starts with the same number: one. Merentiel's finish six minutes into the second half at La Bombonera settled the first leg, and it leaves Sao Paulo needing to win at Morumbis by two goals to reach the semi-finals inside 90 minutes. Win by one and the tie goes to penalties. Draw and Boca go through. Neither club is in anything like a crisis: Boca have lost once in twelve competitive matches and are unbeaten in eleven, while Sao Paulo have taken W4 D3 L1 from their last eight at home and only lost their unbeaten run last Tuesday.

Both coaches are recent appointments with a body of work behind them now. Dorival Junior returned to Sao Paulo on 15 May on a deal to the end of 2026, his third spell at the club. Rodolfo Arruabarrena was confirmed at Boca on 18 June, a decade after his first stint, and has built a side that defends in a compact block and trusts Leandro Paredes to slow the game down. His own reading of the first leg was that it was more Libertadores than Sudamericana: tactical, closed, few chances. That is exactly the match Boca want again.

The week has been about one absence. Jonathan Calleri, the captain and centre-forward, collected his third booking of the competition in the first leg and is suspended. Dorival called it a considerable loss. The numbers are gentler: Sao Paulo won both matches Calleri sat out this month, 2-1 against RB Bragantino and 2-0 against Atletico-MG, with Gustavo Santana leading the line. Boca travel with Agustin Marchesin, Rodrigo Battaglia, Adam Bareiro and Tomas Aranda all ruled out, and with Milton Delgado and Ayrton Costa racing to be fit.

The shape of this match is set by the scoreboard, not by style. Sao Paulo cannot sit. They have to come out, and their home record says they are comfortable doing it: W4 D3 L1 in their last eight at home, 1.62 goals scored and 0.88 conceded per game, and a half-time lead in seven of those eight. They have not failed to score once in that run.

Boca's counter-argument is a defence that has barely leaked in this competition: 0.40 goals conceded per game across five Copa Sudamericana matches, three clean sheets, and only one of those five with both teams scoring. Away from home in all competitions the picture softens - 2W 5D 2L in nine, 1.11 conceded per game, and a goal against in six of them - and a side protecting a one-goal lead against a team that must chase will concede territory.

CONMEBOL had not appointed the referee for the second leg when this went out, which takes the biggest single variable off the table. Piero Maza handled the first leg and produced one caution across the 90 minutes, plus a sending-off he reversed after review.

The team records point the same way as that first leg. Across five Copa Sudamericana matches Sao Paulo have been shown 2.2 cards per game and Boca just 1.2, and both sides have seen the match total pass 3.5 cards in only two of their five.
