Both coaches are in their first season, so there is no new-manager bounce left to price. Raphael Wicky was appointed on 5 January 2026, the first Sporting Kansas City head coach after Peter Vermes, and 23 matches in the table is the honest verdict on his rebuild. That is 31% above the norm, by a referee whose career figure is 3.87. Sporting are the side that fouls: their league matches average 3.7 cards and go over 3.5 in seven of 15, with red cards in two of their last six. LAFC are cleaner, collecting 1.1 a match, but they draw fouls, and their matches still average 3.2.

The shape that produces cards here is a chasing home side. Sporting have been behind at half-time in nine of 15 league matches. Under an average referee those team figures point below the line; under Penso they do not.
