In short

In short

The call
Leverkusen are the better team and the shorter price. Augsburg have the table lead and the last two meetings. We take Leverkusen, in a loud, open game.
The one stat
Nineteen goals in the six competitive matches these two have played this season, and five of those six went over 2.5.
The risk
Augsburg have won both league games, scoring seven, and beat Leverkusen home and away last season. At 4.18 they are not a 4.18 side right now.
The calls
Safer: over 2.5 goals at 1.40. Riskier: Leverkusen by two or more at 2.16. Four more leans on the board.

The situation

FC Augsburg top the Bundesliga. Six points from two matches (W2 D0 L0), seven scored and one conceded: a 3-0 win over Schalke at home, then a 4-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt in which Manuel Baum's side trailed at the break and scored four after it. Add the 2-0 cup win at Energie Cottbus and it is three wins from three competitive matches this season, nine goals for and one against.

Bayer Leverkusen sit seventh on three points from two (W1 D0 L1). They were beaten 3-2 at promoted SV Elversberg on the opening weekend, then answered with a 4-0 against Union Berlin in which Ezequiel Fernández scored inside the first minute. Carles Martínez's team have taken 60% of the ball on weighted season averages, faced 7.3 shots per match in their three competitive games, and are the market's 1.72 favourite here against 4.18.

The fixture itself refuses to be quiet. Eight competitive meetings, four wins each, no draw. Augsburg took the last two, 2-0 at home in December and 2-1 at the BayArena in April, and the away side has won four of the eight. Everything about the week says a result that leans one way rather than a stalemate.

Analysis

Where the goals come from, why the cards should stay low, and why the corner count in Augsburg's matches keeps running hot.

01Goals

Start with the league itself. The Bundesliga is averaging 3.94 goals a match across the 18 games played this season, with 78% of them over 2.5. Neither of these teams is pulling that average down: Augsburg have scored 3.00 goals per game and conceded 0.33 across their three competitive matches, Leverkusen 3.33 and 1.00 across theirs. Five of those six matches cleared 2.5 goals.

The shape of the goals differs, though. Leverkusen create from control and give almost nothing back: 7.3 shots faced per match in three matches, two clean sheets, and a 4-0 against Union Berlin built on 21 shots and 64% of the ball. Augsburg have faced 18.0 shots per match over the same three and still conceded once, because Finn Dahmen has been busy and because they defend deep in a back five and break. Their weighted season averages tell the honest story of that method: 1.85 xG created, 1.97 conceded.

So the goals case is strong and the clean-sheet case is real at the same time. Four of those six matches produced a shutout for one side. That is why we take the totals and leave both-teams-to-score alone at 1.42, and why the Leverkusen win, rather than a shared afternoon, is the way we back the result.

Nineteen goals in six competitive matches between them this season, and Leverkusen have faced 7.3 shots per match to Augsburg's 18.0.

02Cards

No referee has been named for this one, so the read has to come from the teams, and the teams point downwards. Augsburg's three competitive matches this season have produced 3.0 cards each; Leverkusen's have produced 3.7. The league is running at 3.72 a match with 61% going over 3.5, so both sides sit at or under the norm rather than above it.

The method fits. Augsburg foul less than almost anyone on weighted season averages, 9.66 a game, and their pressing is structured rather than frantic; Leverkusen commit 8.84 and spend most of the afternoon with the ball, which is the cheapest way to stay out of a notebook. The caveat is honest: Leverkusen have picked up 2.3 cards per match against them in three matches, so if Augsburg's counters keep arriving, the visitors' full-backs are where the bookings come from.

Augsburg's matches have averaged 3.0 cards and Leverkusen's 3.7, against a league average of 3.72 across 18 matches.

03Corners

This is the one number where Augsburg's matches are genuinely extreme. Across their three competitive games this season they have won 7.0 corners and conceded 6.7, for 13.7 in the match, and all three cleared 9.5. That is a side that shoots from distance, defends its box with five and concedes rebounds: 20.3 shots for and 18.0 against per match is a lot of ball hitting a lot of legs.

Leverkusen pull the other way. Their three matches have averaged 8.7 corners, 5.7 won and only 3.0 conceded, and just one of the three went over 9.5. The league sits at 11.39 a match with 67% over 9.5. Split the difference between a 13.7 match and an 8.7 match, weight it for a home side that will spend long spells defending, and over 9.5 at 1.71 is the side to be on.

All three of Augsburg's competitive matches this season cleared 9.5 corners, at 13.7 a game; Leverkusen's have averaged 8.7.

04The numbers that matter

19
goals in their six matches this season
Three competitive games each, nine for Augsburg and ten for Leverkusen, and five of the six over 2.5. The totals market is the cleanest read on the board.
4-4
in eight competitive meetings, no draw
This fixture keeps picking a winner, which is why we back a result rather than the draw at 4.19.
13.7
corners per Augsburg match
Three from three over 9.5 this season. A deep block, long shots and rebounds is a corner factory.
7.3
shots faced per Leverkusen match
Against 18.0 for Augsburg over the same three matches: the gap in control that the 1.72 price is really pricing.

Two matches of league football is a thin base for anything, which is why every rate above counts all three competitive games each side has played this season and says so. Last season stays where it belongs: in the head-to-head record and in the memory of a Leverkusen team that has changed a great deal since April.

Part two

Who plays, and how

Augsburg's back five is the story of the match, and both squads are missing squad depth rather than starters.

05Team news

Neither side is missing a first-choice starter; Augsburg's absences are in midfield depth, Leverkusen's in the forward line.

06Expected XI

Both coaches are expected to keep the teams that won last weekend: Augsburg's back five against Leverkusen's 4-2-3-1.

07Shape and plan

01

Five against the width

Baum's back five exists to deal with exactly this sort of opponent. Behrens and Wolf can hold the touchline against Moreira and Maza without dragging the three centre-backs apart, which is how Augsburg limited Frankfurt to one goal while taking only 40% of the ball. If Leverkusen get Gutiérrez and Quansah high and pin the wing-backs, Augsburg become a back seven and the counter disappears.

02

The Massengo screen

Everything Leverkusen do runs through Tillman between the lines and García stepping forward from deep. Massengo is the man asked to live in that space, with Rieder and Fellhauer covering the half-spaces on either side. Win that duel and Augsburg's block holds; lose it and Schick starts receiving with his back to a retreating defence.

03

Transition, both ways

Augsburg's method is direct: 20.3 shots per match on 40-48% possession, with Gregoritsch holding the ball up and Rieder delivering from dead balls. Leverkusen's weakness this season has been exactly that moment, as Elversberg's three goals showed. Their rest defence has since tightened to 7.3 shots faced per match, but this is where the home side's goals will come from.

08Three duels

Michael Gregoritsch

FC Augsburg · ST

The reference point for every long ball out of the block. If he holds it against Medina and Tapsoba, Ibrahimović and the wing-backs arrive; if he does not, Augsburg spend the day in their own half.

Fabian Rieder

FC Augsburg · MF

Augsburg's dead-ball taker and the man who scored the fourth at Frankfurt. In a match likely to produce heavy corner counts, he is the single biggest reason the home side can score without a sustained attack.

Patrik Schick

Bayer Leverkusen · ST

Against a three-man central defence he becomes a penalty-box specialist rather than a link man. He scored within three minutes of the second half against Union Berlin, which is exactly the moment Augsburg's block has looked most vulnerable.

Ezequiel Fernández

Bayer Leverkusen · DM

He set the tone last time out with a goal in the first minute and controls the tempo Leverkusen need to break a five-man block. Augsburg's counters start where he loses the ball.

Part three

The call

Our verdict: how the match most likely goes, the score we would write down, and what would change our mind.

09How it could go

Three ways this match goes

Chance of each, out of 100 — most likely first

  1. 45%chanceMost likely

    Leverkusen turn the screw

Leverkusen take 60% of the ball, Augsburg sit in the back five and the first half stays tight. Then the Union Berlin pattern repeats: a goal early in the second half, Augsburg have to come out, space appears behind Behrens and Wolf. Leverkusen win by two, the corners clear 9.5.

  2. 30%chance

    Augsburg break it up

Gregoritsch wins the first ball, Rieder puts a set piece on someone's head, and the table leaders lead at half-time. It is how they beat Leverkusen twice last season and how they turned Frankfurt over after the break. Leverkusen chase, the game opens, Augsburg win 2-1 or 3-2.

  3. 25%chance

    Both defences go

Neither block holds. Augsburg concede the 18.0 shots per match their season suggests, Leverkusen give up the transitions Elversberg punished for three, and the match runs past four goals. This is the version where over 3.5 lands and whoever scores last wins.

The chances are the desk's judgement, not market prices; together they add up to 100.

Four wins each in eight meetings, no draw, and nineteen goals between them in six matches this season. Augsburg will make it awkward. Leverkusen should still make it count.
DeepPreviews analysis desk

10The verdict

Leverkusen win it, but not quietly

Augsburg's start is real and their record in this fixture is better than their price suggests, but the underlying split is wide: 7.3 shots faced per match against 18.0, two clean sheets each yet only one side controls how the game is played. Baum's five will make the first hour uncomfortable and the home crowd will make the rest of it loud. We still think Leverkusen's control tells after the interval, in a match that clears 2.5 goals as five of these two sides' six competitive games have done, with the corner count climbing while Augsburg chase it.

FC Augsburg 1-3 Bayer Leverkusen

What would change our mind

  • If Leverkusen rotate for the European tie four days later, drop the minus-one handicap lean.
  • If Augsburg score first, over 3.5 goals gets stronger, not weaker: they have to be chased.
  • If Gutiérrez or Quansah is missing at the toss, Augsburg's wing-backs get the space and the corner lean strengthens.
