Europe returns to Wearside after 53 years, and the Sunderland vs AZ Alkmaar prediction is harder than the prices suggest. Regis Le Bris, in charge since the summer of 2024, has built a side that wins tight matches rather than open ones: five competitive matches this season, four goals scored, five conceded, two clean sheets, and only one of the five going past 2.5 goals. They lost 0-2 at home to Arsenal on Saturday. Before that, three matches unbeaten.

AZ arrive as the form side and the better team on paper. Six competitive matches, five wins and a draw, 17 scored and six conceded, 2.51 xG a game. Lee-Roy Echteld, promoted from the interim job in January 2026 after Maarten Martens was dismissed, won the KNVB Cup with them and took the Europa League place with it. But the run was built in the Eredivisie, against Dutch opposition, and a 5-2 win over Go Ahead Eagles does not price a Premier League away day.

That is the whole argument. The market makes Sunderland a 55% favourite; the Elo ratings have AZ 89 points clear, which home advantage roughly cancels. Between a first-tier league and a second, the higher-tier side is the structural favourite and the lower-tier side's streaks are not evidence against it. We side with the market, narrowly, and expect very few goals.

Sunderland's matches are quiet. Five competitive matches this season have produced nine goals between both sides, 1.80 a match. At the Stadium of Light it is quieter still: three matches, four goals in total, no match with both teams scoring, two clean sheets. Their 1-0 wins over Fulham and Hull City are the template, and the 0-2 against Arsenal is the exception that still stayed under 2.5.

AZ pull the other way on paper. They have scored in every one of their six competitive matches, 2.83 a game, off 2.51 xG. Read the sample though: all six were Eredivisie matches, and the three biggest returns came against Go Ahead Eagles, Utrecht and Fortuna Sittard. Against a Premier League defence that has conceded 1.00 a game and kept two clean sheets in five, that rate is a ceiling, not a forecast.

So the shape is tight. We make three or more goals about 48% against the market's 55%, and under 3.5 close to 76%. The safest version of the view is the wider line; the sharper one is under 2.5, which Sunderland have delivered in four of five this season and all three at home.

Two very different disciplinary profiles. Sunderland's five competitive matches have averaged 4.2 cards with three of the five past 3.5, and they collected five bookings against Arsenal alone. AZ have averaged 2.2 a match and gone past 3.5 once in six, taking 0.8 a game themselves - among the tidiest records anywhere.

The corner counts say more about the two styles than anything else on this page. AZ win 9.2 a game and concede 3.5, a margin that comes from 20.0 shots a game and long spells camped in the opposition half. Sunderland win 4.4 and concede 5.2, and their matches have gone past 9.5 once in five.

Put the two together and something has to give. If AZ get the ball where they normally get it, the corner count climbs and the pressure with it. If Sunderland's mid-block holds the way it did against Fulham, AZ take their corners from wide areas that lead nowhere. We take no lean from it - corners are a coin flip - but it is the clearest early read on which plan is working.
