Bayern München vs Union Berlin

Neither club is in crisis, but only one of them is comfortable. Union Berlin have one point from three (W0 D1 L2), four scored and ten conceded, sixteenth and inside the relegation play-off place. Two straight defeats is not three, so this is not a sacking week in Köpenick, but it is the week where a new coach runs out of formations to try.

That coach is Mauro Lustrinelli, appointed on 21 May 2026 after winning the Swiss title with Thun, brought in to make Union more proactive and younger. Three matchdays in, the proactive part has cost them: they have cycled through three centre-back pairings, conceded immediately after half-time in both defeats, and Lustrinelli has said plainly that his side are too undisciplined and that he has no explanation for the goals just after the break. The week itself is quiet. Champions League matchday one was played on 8-10 September and matchday two is not until mid-October, so nobody travelled midweek. Bayern have had five days since Elversberg, Union seven since losing at home to Schalke on the Friday. The elephant is Bayern's own inconsistency in front of goal away from home: 0-0 at Schalke despite 1.94 expected goals against 0.21, then 71 minutes of struggle at Elversberg. Both were away days against newly promoted sides who sat deep. At the Allianz Arena with Musiala, Díaz and Olise behind Kane, and against a back line that has conceded 3.33 per league game, that hesitation is far less likely to survive the first twenty minutes.
