Santos vs Atletico-MG

Two clubs arrive at Vila Belmiro missing the men they were built around. Santos lost Neymar to a torn right thigh muscle against Palmeiras on 2 September, the same night Alvaro Barreal went down with a hamstring tear and Lucas Verissimo turned an ankle, and the same night they went out of the Copa do Brasil. Rony completes the damage: a third yellow card against Macara rules him out of the first leg. Cuca has three new registrations to lean on instead, with Arthur, Rodinei and Lima all added to the squad list for the quarter-finals.

Atletico-MG are worse off. Everson has a fractured left foot, Ruan Tressoldi and Leo Duarte are both out with hamstring injuries, Tomas Perez has pubalgia, Thiago Borbas is injured, and Tomas Cuello, who scored the goal that knocked out RB Bragantino, is suspended on three yellows. Eduardo Dominguez expects Lyanco and Maycon back after seven and one matches out respectively, which would rebuild half a back four. His side lost 2-0 at Sao Paulo on Saturday, their first defeat in fifteen matches.

The numbers say this is close to a coin flip with the goals turned off. Santos are unbeaten in their last four Sudamericana matches (W3 D1), Atletico-MG in their last three (W2 D1). Santos have drawn four of their last seven competitive home matches. Atletico-MG have not won any of their last three away. Neither attack has anyone left who reliably breaks a set defence.

Start with what Atletico-MG give up. Across their last three Sudamericana matches they have conceded two goals in total, 0.67 per game, keeping two clean sheets. Across their last eight away matches in all competitions the figure is 0.75 per game, with both teams scoring in only three of the eight and just two of the eight going over 2.5. That is a side that travels to defend and is comfortable doing it.

Santos look explosive in this competition on paper: 2.50 goals per game and 2.16 xG per game in their last four Sudamericana matches. Read the fixtures, though, and the run is 4-1 and 4-2 against UCV plus 2-1 and 0-0 against Macara. Against Brazilian opposition the story flattens: 1.29 goals per game in their last seven competitive home matches, with three of those seven ending goalless or scoreless for Santos.

The history agrees. These clubs have met eight times competitively for 2.00 goals a meeting, both scoring in four and only two clearing 2.5. The last three read 1-0, 1-1 and 2-0. Take Neymar, Barreal and Rony out of one side and Cuello out of the other, and there is no obvious reason for that pattern to break.

This is the chapter where the competition average misleads.
