Independiente del Valle vs Flamengo

These two have not met since 2023, and they meet now with a semi-final on the line. This is the first leg; the return is at the Maracanã on 17 September. The venue moved before a ball was kicked: the 20,000-seat minimum for this round pushed the tie out of Independiente del Valle's 12,000-capacity home ground and into the Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa, where 35,000 can get in. The one thing that did not change is the air. Both grounds sit 2,850 metres above sea level.

Flamengo arrive as the holders and as the best side left on almost every measure. They have not lost a Libertadores match this season: six wins and two draws from eight, 17 scored and four conceded. Sunday's 1-0 at Remo put them top of Brazil's league on 54 points, one clear of Palmeiras. Their wider form reads seven wins, three draws and one defeat from 11 competitive matches, 23 scored and seven conceded, with three straight wins behind them. Independiente del Valle are the reason none of that settles anything. Twelve wins, one draw and one defeat from 14 competitive matches. Unbeaten in their last seven at home, six wins and a draw, 21 goals scored and seven conceded. They removed Deportes Tolima 4-1 across two legs, then rotated heavily and still beat Macará 3-1 on Saturday with this date circled. Leonardo Jardim flew his squad in on Monday, three days out, and will train twice on Ecuadorian soil before kick-off.

Neither of these teams knows how to be shut out. Independiente del Valle have scored in all 14 of their competitive matches this season; Flamengo in all 11 of theirs. Twenty-five matches, no blanks. Everything else about this fixture argues both ways, so that is where we start.

At home Independiente del Valle are relentless. Their last seven home competitive matches brought 3.00 goals per game, 21 in total, and six of the seven cleared 2.5 goals. Add the seven conceded and those matches averaged 4.0 goals apiece.
